I’ve been insanely busy for the last week and I’m not quite through things (supervisor needs preliminary data for an upcoming grant and it’s proving very difficult to generate), but I’ve come across some interesting tidbits that I’d like to post about so over the next week or so I hope I’ll find the time for some short updates. For today, some AFM imaging. Up until recently, all the work I had done with AFM was for pulling proteins but now I’m finding a need for a combined imaging/pulling (or pushing) kind of experiment and it’s been a challenge. But I have had some partial success with myosin filaments as you can see in this image:

Getting the pictures is not the end of the story of course, but you’ll have to stay tuned for the future details. In the mean time, you can check out this Nature news feature on AFM imaging in the life sciences (unfortunately, I think you need a subscription). There have been some recent reports of atomic resolution images in fluid using non-contact AFM. It will be really exciting to see how far it can be pushed for biological samples.
